Pakistan Military Vows Crackdown on India-Backed Terrorists
Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir has pledged to intensify counterterrorism operations against Indian-sponsored groups, following an 83% surge in violence-linked fatalities in Q3 2026, concentrated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

Pakistan's military leadership has vowed decisive action against India-backed terrorist groups amid a severe escalation of violence. Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir resolved that the Pakistan Army will hit these terrorists hard during a visit to the Corps Headquarters in Peshawar.
Munir reaffirmed the armed forces' commitment to continue the campaign against Indian-sponsored terrorist outfits "to the fullest" and to "hit them hard wherever they are." He expressed confidence that, with public support, Pakistan would inflict total defeat on the terrorists. The military chief paid tribute to fallen soldiers and wounded security personnel during his visit, which was confirmed by an Inter-Services Public Relations statement.
Security Crisis Deepens in KP and Balochistan
Violence-linked fatalities surged by 83% in the third quarter of 2026. The provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bore the overwhelming brunt of this violence.
| Province | Fatalities in Q3 2026 | Share of National Total |
|---|---|---|
| Balochistan | 829 | Nearly 59% |
| Khyber Pakhtunkhwa | 556 | More than 39% |
Together, the two provinces accounted for 98% of all violence-linked fatalities nationwide during that period. This sharp rise is driven by cross-border militant activities, which have increased since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021. Pakistan recorded its highest monthly number of militant attacks in 12 years during September 2026.
Recent operations underscore the ongoing threat. A day before the report, four policemen were killed and two terrorists neutralized in an exchange of fire in KP's Karak district. On October 19, an army major was martyred and four terrorists killed during intelligence-based operations in Balochistan. Just prior to that, security forces killed eight 'India-sponsored' terrorists in operations across Quetta, Nushki, and Khuzdar districts.
Federal and Military Coordination for Stability
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the military leadership are coordinating a joint response to the crisis. The day before Munir's visit, Shehbaz chaired a Federal Apex Committee meeting at the Governor's House in Peshawar, which was attended by senior civil and military officials, including Munir.
At that meeting, the Prime Minister announced a Rs160 billion development package for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, aimed at promoting peace and development. Shehbaz stated that the federal government and military leadership are working together on a fast-track basis to restore lasting peace. This package was announced amid the imposition of governor’s rule and emergency measures in the province due to deteriorating law and order. Shehbaz indicated that difficult decisions were necessary, potentially including these very measures.
Operational Vigilance and Regional Tensions
During his Peshawar visit, Field Marshal Munir was briefed on the security situation, counter-terrorism operations, border management, and operational preparedness. He lauded the high morale and professionalism of the officers and troops. Munir directed the armed forces to maintain vigilance and the highest standards of operational readiness to counter ongoing threats.
The crisis is set against persistent regional tensions. Islamabad has repeatedly urged the Afghan Taliban regime in Kabul to prevent its territory from being used by militant organisations to launch attacks inside Pakistan. Pakistan maintains that Kabul has failed to take effective action against groups responsible for attacks on Pakistani security forces and civilians. Despite multiple rounds of talks, the issue of militant groups operating from Afghan soil remains a major point of contention, with differences yet to be resolved. Military operations against India-backed terrorist outfits continue with sustained public support and federal-provincial coordination.
