FBR extends income tax return deadline to October 31, 2026
Pakistan's Federal Board of Revenue has extended the income tax return filing deadline for tax year 2026 to October 31, following formal requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations citing technical and procedural challenges.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for tax year 2026 to October 31, 2026. The extension, announced via a notification on the FBR's X account, was granted in view of requests from various trade bodies and tax bar associations and was made under the powers conferred by Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.
The move applies specifically to persons who were originally required to file by September 30 and had already received a prior extension to October 15. It marks the second such extension granted by the revenue authority within a month. The first, announced on October 1, had shifted the original September 30 deadline to October 15.
Pressure for the new date came from multiple business and professional groups. Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry President Atif Ikram Sheikh formally urged the government to extend the deadline to October 31 to facilitate trade, industry, and tax filers. The Karachi Tax Bar Association submitted a detailed letter to the Member Inland Revenue (Operations) highlighting persistent technical glitches in the IRIS portal and delays in the issuance of draft notifications.
Similar appeals were made by the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry and the Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industry. Their office-bearers cited widespread difficulties for taxpayers, particularly traders, SMEs, and consultants, stemming from new return forms, additional disclosure requirements, wealth statement reconciliation, and ongoing technical issues.
Filing trends show sharp rise in returns and tax paid
Despite the procedural delays prompting the extension, income tax return filings have surged significantly. Data shows a sharp year-on-year increase in both the number of returns filed and the total tax paid by the midpoint of October.
| Metric | Period 2026 | Corresponding Period 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total Returns Filed | 6.71 million (by Oct 14) | 4.99 million | +34.38% |
| Total Returns Filed | 5.76 million (by Sep 30) | 3.98 million | ~+45% |
| Total Tax Paid | Rs66.81 billion (by Oct 14) | Rs58.29 billion | +14.61% |
| Returns by Salaried Individuals | 2.18 million (by Oct 14) | 1.88 million | +16.16% |
| Returns by Non-Salaried Individuals | 4.45 million (by Oct 14) | 3.04 million | +46.35% |
Legal basis and procedural context of the extension
The extension is firmly grounded in Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. This provision grants the FBR the authority to amend deadlines. The latest move provides taxpayers with an additional two weeks to complete their submissions.
Tax experts have noted that the FBR was legally permitted to extend the deadline up to December 2026, irrespective of the number of returns received by the October 15 cutoff. The sequence of extensions reflects an ongoing effort to balance compliance facilitation with the administrative challenges of processing a record volume of filings. Taxpayers now have until October 31, 2026 to file their income tax returns for tax year 2026.
