Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announces free LPG cylinders and expanded bus travel scheme for women

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK supremo C Joseph Vijay announced that women heads of households will receive 3 free LPG cylinders annually under the 'Annapoorani Super Six' scheme. The scheme is expected to benefit 1.3 crore families and will be implemented from Pongal in January, with an estimated annual budgetary outlay of ₹4,000 crore.

Free LPG Cylinders and Bus Travel Scheme

The 'Annapoorani Super Six' scheme will cover households with an annual income not exceeding ₹2.5 lakh, economically weaker sections, families of small and marginal farmers, and families of differently-abled persons. According to the Chief Minister, the cost of the cooking gas cylinder will be reimbursed and directly credited to the bank accounts of the female heads of families upon booking and delivery based on the official billing from oil marketing companies.

Eligibility and Benefits

The eligibility criteria for the 'Annapoorani Super Six' scheme include households with an annual income not exceeding ₹2.5 lakh. The benefits of the scheme will be available to women heads of households, with the cost of the cooking gas cylinder being reimbursed directly into their bank accounts. The scheme will also cover state-run buses, express, as well as deluxe buses, with no riders like income ceiling or number of trips for women to avail fare-free bus travel.

Other Announcements

The Chief Minister also announced that the plan to establish Chennai's second airport at Parandur has been dropped, citing concerns about the impact on agricultural land and the livelihoods of farmers and residents. According to the Chief Minister, Chennai's Meenambakkam airport currently has the capacity to handle 30 million passengers annually, and a new airport is needed to meet the city's growing requirements. The HT News Desk reported that the Chief Minister stated the new airport should be located at a place where agricultural land and residential areas are minimally affected.
