Kerala Ministers Attend Strategic Retreat at IIM Kozhikode

Kerala's Council of Ministers has commenced a two-day residential strategic leadership retreat at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM-K). The event, titled 'Reimagining Keralam', focuses on long-term challenges and opportunities for the state's development.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan inaugurated the retreat by lighting a traditional lamp on Friday. The gathering includes the full Council of Ministers, IIM-K faculty, and experts from international institutions. Discussions will cover artificial intelligence, climate resilience, public health, ageing, employment, higher education, and fiscal sustainability.

Programme Structure and Intent

IIM-K Director Debashis Chatterjee conceptualized the programme after meeting with the Chief Minister. He stated the retreat aims to give the state's political leadership space to reflect on developments beyond daily administrative demands. According to Prof. Chatterjee, this is not a conventional training course. It is a series of dialogues and reflective conversations among policymakers, practitioners, and scholars, with no examinations or evaluations of participants.

The sessions are designed to build a shared understanding of long-term forces shaping Kerala. They seek to help evidence-based approaches for turning policy intent into sustainable outcomes.

Key Discussion Topics

The retreat's agenda examines several critical areas. These include transformational leadership in artificial intelligence and behavioural approaches to translating policy into lasting change. Other sessions will cover climate resilience, community-based disaster preparedness, and public health challenges linked to an ageing population.

Further discussion areas are the emerging 'silver economy', strengthening Kerala's economic and fiscal foundations, and addressing employment, entrepreneurship, and skills amid technological changes. The programme also aims to discuss excellence in higher education and positioning Kerala as a global brand.

Faculty and Expert Participation

IIM-K faculty members will conduct the sessions alongside international experts. Contributors include experts from Keio University in Japan and King's College London. Dr. Aravind Srinivasan, Chief Medical Officer and Director-Projects at Aravind Eye Care System, will lead a session on healthcare and wellness.

This event marks the second dedicated leadership programme for the Kerala Cabinet hosted by IIM-K. The institute previously hosted a day-long leadership and management programme for the Cabinet led by the late Oommen Chandy in 2011. Prof. Chatterjee, now serving his third term as IIM-K Director, also headed the institute during that earlier engagement.

A 'Back-to-School' Moment

Chief Minister Satheesan described the experience as a 'back-to-school' moment. He and his cabinet colleagues returned to the classroom setting at IIM-K. Satheesan posted photographs on social media platform X, showing ministers seated in an IIM-K classroom. He wrote, "I am back to the classroom after years."

The Chief Minister had earlier stated the exercise was meant to help ministers look beyond routine administration. The workshop seeks to provide an opportunity to step back from daily demands and deliberate on long-term challenges. The goal is to work towards a roadmap for a future-ready Kerala. A communication from IIM-K stated this engagement is part of its continuing efforts to help interaction among government, academia, and society.
