Drug addict breaches J&K CM residence after police release

A 21-year-old drug addict trespassed into the official residence of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday, minutes after being released from a local police post. The incident occurred on high-security Wazarat Road in Jammu while the Chief Minister was away in New Delhi.

According to a police officer cited by the Hindustan Times, the accused, Tilak Raj, was bailed out in a drug case around 4:15 pm. Police had called his father to the post, but the youth was reluctant to go home. After being handed over to his father's custody, Raj fled into a bushy area and scaled the wall of the CM's residence, which is a short distance from the police post.

The officer stated Raj was a known drug addict from Kakryal in Katra who had also been involved in local thefts. Approximately three to four FIRs are registered against him at Kakryal. Though nothing incriminating was found on him during this incident, he was completely intoxicated when apprehended by security at the residence. The police assessment was that he harbored no malicious intentions.

Security concerns raised

The breach has amplified existing security concerns raised by National Conference leaders. They have repeatedly pointed to laxity by security agencies in providing cover for CM Omar Abdullah and his father, Dr. Farooq Abdullah.

The report recalls an attempted assassination of Farooq Abdullah on March 11 in Jammu's Greater Kailash area. As he was leaving a venue around 10:10 pm, an accused individual allegedly drew a licensed weapon and attempted to open fire before being subdued by security personnel. That case remains sub judice in a Jammu court.

Political context of security

National Conference leaders, including Omar Abdullah, have often raised issues regarding security arrangements since Jammu and Kashmir's status was downgraded from a state to a Union Territory in August 2019. Law and order in the UT is handled by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

The trespass incident occurred on a day when Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was in New Delhi. He was meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, the finalization of business rules for transactions between the elected government and the Lieutenant Governor, and other key issues.

Police confirmed the individual was caught by security personnel inside the CM's residence compound and brought back to the police post for further action.
