Police arrested 25-year-old Syed Abubakar of Islampur on Friday on charges of a terrorist act for alleged links with Pakistani gangsters via Instagram. The Doddaballapur Town police filed a case under sections 113(3) and 197(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita after a tip-off prompted a swift response.

Arrest and initial inquiry

According to the Hindustan Times report, a constable attached to Doddaballapur Town police station received an informer’s warning at about 10:30 am on August 20 that Abubakar was engaging in suspicious dealings with individuals from Pakistan. The officer arrived at the Islampur Circle around 11 am, confronted the mechanic, and recorded his uncooperative answers before taking him into custody.

The police noted that Abubakar, who works as an AC mechanic, failed to provide satisfactory explanations when questioned and attempted to leave the scene. His mobile device was seized for forensic analysis, which formed the basis of the subsequent charges.

Social-media trail and alleged connections

Examination of the seized phone revealed an Instagram account listed as "sayedabudakar 313" that had interacted with content posted by another user, "Hammadmemon 333". The FIR states that Abubakar liked reels featuring Pakistan-based gangsters and uploaded videos of the same individuals as status updates. He also shared his identity card with the "Hammadmemon 333" account, suggesting a direct exchange of personal details.

In addition to the gang-related media, investigators found several photographs of pistols on the device, which they interpreted as an indication of an interest in firearms. The complainant warned that Abubakar could potentially incite youth against India and undertake actions harmful to national sovereignty.

Legal framework and charges

The complaint prompted Doddaballapur Town Police to register a case under two provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: section 113(3), which addresses terrorist acts, and section 197(2), covering imputations or assertions prejudicial to national integration. These sections were invoked to reflect the seriousness of the alleged radicalisation and cross-border connections.
