Why Kim Jong Un Might Seek Another Summit with Trump
Despite North Korea's strengthened position, Kim Jong Un may have strategic reasons to meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump again, including nuclear recognition, security reductions, and diplomatic leverage.

U.S. President Donald Trump recently shared a photo of himself with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Truth Social, emphasizing their strong personal relationship. This has reignited speculation about whether Kim would be open to another summit with Trump, despite North Korea’s improved geopolitical standing.
## Strategic Incentives for Kim Jong Un
Kim Jong Un may have several compelling reasons to meet with Trump again, even though North Korea’s reliance on U.S. sanctions relief has diminished due to stronger ties with Russia and China.
First, a summit could further solidify North Korea’s status as a nuclear-armed state. Trump has previously acknowledged North Korea’s nuclear capabilities, and Kim may see another meeting as an opportunity to reinforce this recognition, even if it remains informal.
Second, Kim could use negotiations to reduce the U.S. military presence in South Korea. Trump has expressed skepticism about the cost of U.S.-South Korea military exercises, suggesting he may be open to scaling them back-a move that would align with Pyongyang’s long-standing concerns.
Third, renewed diplomacy could ease Kim’s fears of a U.S. military strike. Recent U.S. operations, such as actions against Venezuela and Iran, have heightened North Korea’s concerns about potential decapitation strikes. A summit could reduce tensions and lower the risk of direct conflict.
## Diplomatic and Domestic Benefits
Fourth, improving relations with the U.S. could give North Korea more leverage in its relationship with China. While Pyongyang depends on Beijing for economic support, it has also sought to maintain independence. A closer U.S. relationship could serve as a counterbalance to Chinese influence.
Fifth, a Kim-Trump meeting could help North Korea diplomatically isolate South Korea. Since abandoning reunification efforts in 2024, Pyongyang has rejected dialogue with Seoul. A direct U.S.-North Korea summit would reinforce the idea that key issues on the peninsula can be resolved without South Korea’s involvement.
Sixth, another summit could bolster Kim’s domestic legitimacy. If he secures concessions-such as reduced U.S. military presence, balanced relations with China, and nuclear recognition-he could position himself as a strategic leader, particularly amid domestic scrutiny over North Korea’s military support for Russia.
## China’s Role and Potential Outcomes
China’s stance on a potential summit remains a key factor. While Beijing cannot outright prevent North Korea from engaging with the U.S., it would likely seek to influence the negotiations to protect its interests, particularly regarding U.S. military activities in the region.
Given these dynamics, analysts suggest that the likelihood of another Kim-Trump summit remains high. Such a meeting could reshape East Asia’s geopolitical landscape, making it a development worth monitoring closely.
