A long-term agreement for the export of Iranian oil to Tajikistan has been finalized, according to reports. The agreement comes as Tajikistan seeks to reduce its reliance on Russian oil imports, which account for an estimated 90 percent of the country's oil product imports.

The announcement follows a month after Tajikistan, Iran, and Afghanistan signed an agreement to establish a logistics corridor through Afghanistan. This development comes as the global energy market faces increased pressure, with the U.S. conflict with Iran continuing past a 60-day deadline set in June.

Tajikistan has been feeling the fuel pinch, with the country's Minister of Energy and Water, Daler Juma, stating that the country's fuel reserves would last for around 60 days. The situation has led to escalated prices across the country, with some regions reporting shortages of diesel fuel, lines at gas stations, and rationing.

The agreement between Tajikistan and Iran is seen as a move to address the country's energy needs. Iran's semi-official news outlet, Mehr News Agency, reported that the two sides had finalized a framework and agreed to set up a working group to examine the technical and logistical details of the cooperation.

Tajikistan has been exploring alternative suppliers and routes amid increased pressure on global energy markets. The country has traded goods worth $119.6 million with Iran in the first three months of 2026, an 8 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

However, the security of the route through Afghanistan remains a concern. The region has seen increased conflict, particularly in the Badakhshan Province, which borders Tajikistan. A new resistance group, Sipahiyan-i-Mihan, has emerged in the area, capturing a district seat last month.

The agreement between Tajikistan and Iran is seen as a move to address the country's energy needs, but the security of the route through Afghanistan remains a concern.
